What if something goes wrong ?
Surely, the dive centers insurance will cover is something goes wrong ! Unfortunately, in most cases, it won't.
Although all reputable dive centers carry some form of liability insurance, it is extremely rare that such an insurance will cover if an accident involves a certfied diver.
In general, certified divers are 100 % responsible for their own actions and a certified diver assume the risk whenever he goes diving (and generally always signs a form at the dive center prior to diving establishing this). Diving with a divemaster or an Instructor does not change this.
Diving without insurance is like driving a car without insurance. Would you ever do that ?
It is adviseable that all divers (even student divers) carry an all risks scuba diving insurance.
A good diving insurance will not only pick up the costs for treatment following a diving accident (treatment and evacuation can be extremely expensive) but it may even assist in and coordinate the whole operation.
There are a number of insurance policies out there. Most divers opt for the insurance offered by Divers Alert Network (DAN), who offer a number of different packages, all depending on how much you plan to dive.
We have actually had the use of DAN's services in the past, both in Dubai (in connection with a diving accident) and during a trip to Thailand (a non diving related illness) and their handling of the situation was really good in both cases.
