Whale Shark spotted at Dibba Rock !!

Divers & snorkelers visiting Dibba Rock last Friday (Jan 26th) got themselves a bit of a surprise. Apart from the usual array of marine life, Dibba Rock was visited by a 10-metre whale shark, accompanied by a school of Remoras.

The whale shark spent a good 15 minutes with the divers before heading off again. Divers have in the past boasted about seeing whalesharks in the area, but, to our knowledge, it has been a while since somebody produced any photographic evidence...but not this time.. here you go !!

Photos of the Whale Shark taken by Sam Fawzy - thank you, Sam.

So dont worry about the water being a bit nippy at the moment. Head over to Dibba for a chance to spot one of these amazing creatures (in fact, we have heard of some divers, who were at the East Coast this weekend, but did not go because the water was cold.. and missed the whaleshark !!!).

Clean Up Arabia 2006

The 11th anniversary of Clean Up Arabia witnessed the biggest number of participants in its history!  Nearly a thousand volunteers from across the Emirates and as far as Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain joined the annual clean up.

The cleanup took place in Musandam, Ras Al Khaimah, Abu Dhabi, the East Coast and in Bahrain. The East Coast saw the biggest clean up operation when more than 400 divers and volunteers joined the main event at Le Meridien Al Aqah beach resort.

Diving in Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) is not that well known amongst divers, but that may soon be about to change.

According to Adel & Chantal at Arabian Divers, there is some nice diving to be found around there, including coral reefs and, off course, wrecks. Arabian Divers operate "Lejaine", a custom built luxury motor sailing schooner and offers diving, snorkeling and boat trips off the RAK coastline. They even have options that include signing up for a membership in return for unlimited diving!

                   "Lejaine"

For more information, you can either email them on chantal@arabiandiver.com or log onto their website www.arabiandiver.com

Diving Feature in "Concierge"

The birth of a new Dhow !!

This October, divers visiting Musandam might have spotted the latest addition to the Al Marsa fleet, the Yellow Dhow (named Al Naseem).

This Dhow is brand new and will operate both as a liveaboard and as a day trip boat.

The dhow is 81ft long and is the biggest and best of them all with 6 twin cabins (all with A/C), big Saloon (also with A/C), Sun deck (without A/C!!), bar and home theatre and sound system. In other words, this boat has it all!!!

To find out more, contact Al Marsa on email info@musandamdiving.com

New CPR procedures

In the latest newsletter from Divers Alert Network, DAN, it is reported that there has been a change in the procedure for providing CPR to a non-responsive patient.

In future, rescuers are not to deliver the two initial rescue breaths, but should commence with chest compressions if there are no signs of circulation. Also, the ratio between chest compressions and rescue breaths is now 30:2 - this is for both adults and children.

The changes are still new and may vary between training organisations, so best thing would be to contact the trainer from your last CPR course. It is, however, stressed that until you have received updated training, the old method is still to be used!!

Diving safety in the UAE

In 7 Days on 30.10 there was a letter from a reader, describing the events that followed a near-drowning incident involving a snorkeler on the East Coast.

The reader critizised the operator in question and the way this emergency was handled and put a questionmark at the general safety in the UAE when it comes to diving and watersports.

I personally think that we have come a long way the last few years (and diving is still way safer than driving down Sh. Zayed Road!) but there is still plenty of room for improvement - safety should of course always be the first thing on the minds of diving operators.

The main problem that operators face here is, however, that there are no set standards for safety, so it is difficult to know what to adhere to.

The EDA Safety Committee is currenlty working on uniformed safety standards for the UAE, but in the meantime, it is down to each diver to ask the relevant questions when going diving and, if not satisfied with the answers, dont dive!!

It is easy for a dive centre to obtain a PADI 5 star status - what really matters is how they run their operation on a day-to-day basis.
